The mechanism of Zero Hangover, The Last Defense
When alcoholic drinks are stored and digested in the stomach, it begins to enter the bloodstream and liver, eventually it is transported throughout the body ultimately affecting the brain. When alcohol metabolizes in the liver this creates acetaldehyde. The production of acetaldehyde is then aggressively neutralized by the tripeptide called glutathione normally stored in the liver. When large amounts of alcohol are consumed, the liver’s glutathione storage is quickly depleted.
As we consume alcohol and it enters the body it causes the pituitary gland in the brain to block the creation of vasopressin, also known as the anti-diuretic hormone. The absence of this hormone causes the kidneys to constantly send water to the bladder, which has drinkers urinating more than normal. The loss of this water causes severe dehydration over the next 12 to 24 hours. The effect of frequent urination expels salts such as sodium, magnesium and potassium that are necessary for proper nerve and muscle function. When sodium and potassium levels are reduced, headaches, fatigue and nausea can result.
There are only 3 ways that alcohol can exit the body:
- The kidney eliminates approximately 5 percent of alcohol in the urine.
- The lungs exhale approximately 5 percent of alcohol, which can be detected by a breathalyzer.
- The liver chemically breaks down the remaining alcohol into acetic acid.
Ethanol is oxidized in the liver by the enzyme aldehyde dehydrogenase which produces acetaldehyde. This, in the presence of oxygen forms acetic acid. When ethanol is oxidized to acetic acid, two protons and two electrons are also produced.

Because alcohol is absorbed directly through the stomach, the cells that line the organ become irritated. Alcohol also promotes secretion of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, eventually causing the nerves to send a message to the brain that the stomach’s contents are hurting the body and must be expelled through vomiting.
This oxidation is of no importance industrially, but in the human body, these oxidation reactions are catalyzed by the liver enzyme alcohol dehydrogenase. The oxidation by-product of ethanol and acetic acid is a nutrient for humans……being a precursor to acetyl CoA, where the acetyl group can be spent as energy or used for biosynthesis.
Alcohol dehydrogenases (ADH) are a group of dehydrogenase enzymes that occur to facilitate the interconversion of ethanol with the reduction of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+ to NADH). In humans, this serves to break down alcohols by oxidation. Certain amino acid sequences in the enzymes are used to oxidize ethanol by sulfotransferase. Sulfotransferases are transferase enzymes that catalyze the transfer of a sulfate group from a donor molecule to an acceptor alcohol, in this case the ethanol.
The sulfur ions generated from our patented product, in this active site initiates a nucleophilic attack on the carbonyl carbon of the ethanol. The hydrogen molecule is kicked off as a hydride and attacks NAD+ to make NADH. The reaction is expressed as:
